2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Ausone is a deep, statuesque Saint-Émilion that is at the beginning of what will surely be a very long, long life. Its vertical energy, stunning aromatics and persistence are all things of beauty, but it is the balance here that is so captivating. The acids and tannins are at once searing in their…

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Ausone has a perfumed nose with another Cabernet Franc-driven set of aromas, gravel and loam infusing the black fruit. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a beautifully sculpted wine with a killer line of acidity and immense precision on the finish. This just sashays along with style. Fabulous. Tasted blind…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Les Pensées de Lafleur is a dense, powerful wine that really shows the intensity of the drought in its super-concentrated, dark fruit. This imposing Pomerol is going to need at least a few years in bottle to open. In this tasting, it is incredibly reticent.

The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly powdery texture and a keen thread of acidity to counterbalance the richness and precocity on the finish. A worthy follow-up to the…

A Woman’s Touch: Lafleur 1985-2022 (Sep 2025)

The 2019 Les Perrières de Lafleur has more complexity, delineation and focus than the previous vintage—a little more personality. Scents of crushed stone underlie its veneer of black fruit. The palate is bright and sapid, very focused and poised, but there is real concentration and grip on the finessed, lengthy finish. Excellent. Tasted from ex-château…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Les Perrières, is driven by strong Franc inflections. Mocha, dried flowers, lavender, rose petal and spice lend gorgeous aromatic intensity throughout. Clean veins of saline minerality from these limestone-rich soils give the 2019 a real sense of energy that is absolutely compelling. This is such a gorgeous wine. I would give the 2019…
