Lower Your Sails (Or Breeches): Beychevelle 1929-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 2009 Beychevelle is very perfumed and floral on the nose with brambly red fruit loam, incense and mint. It’s well-defined and shows more pedigree than the 2005. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, a fine bead of acidity and slightly grainy in texture. This has a touch of curry leaf towards the…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Inky purple. Floral aromas of black plum and graphite. Easygoing and fine-grained, with a distinctly cool quality to the blackberry, floral and mint flavors. Pliant in the middle palate but with cedar, floral and herbal notes providing very good lift. Its light touch and suave mouth feel make Beychevelle easy to recognize in a blind…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Opaque inky purple. Aromas of blueberry, sweet plum and chocolate pudding are complicated by hints of wet earth and animal fur. Enters sweet and ripe, but shows very good grip and inner-palate energy to its black fruit and herbal flavors. This ultimately suave and smooth wine finishes with supple, broad tannins and sneaky length. Only…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Kirwan showed extremely well, mocking my previous lukewarm reaction. It has an attractive cedar and graphite infused bouquet, plenty of black fruit with touches of wild mint developing with aeration. This coalesces nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine thread of acidity, gentle grip with hints of…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Bright red-ruby. Wild meaty nose lifted by a floral element. Sweet, fine-grained and fairly generous in the mouth, with plenty of baby fat to its dark fruit flavors. But ultimately a wine of moderate richness and concentration. The persistent but slightly dry-edged finish shows a sweet/sour quality.

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Réserve de la Comtesse feels unusually primal on the nose with brine-tinged black fruit, touches of graphite but overall it does not come across as particularly finessed. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a little extracted in style with impressive weight, just lacking a little sophistication towards the finish. That said, it…
