The A to Z of South Africa (Nov 2023)

The 2021 Ava Marie is whole bunch pressed and matured partially in amphorae for 12 months. It takes a little while to open, revealing candle wax, pressed white flowers and orange pith notes with aeration. The palate is slightly granular on the entry, just a faint underlying oatmeal note, with fine tension and a little…

Quinta do Noval: Recent Vintages 2011-2020 (Nov 2022)

The 2012 Vintage Port is quite backward and slightly smoky on the nose, opening with allspice, undergrowth and sage, though the 2013 has greater amplitude and complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry, building towards quite a peppery, tangy marmalade-tinged mid-palate that drives home the finish. Not as assured as the 2013,…

Variations on a Theme: Burgundy 2020 Whites (Jul 2024)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot 1er Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) has a vibrant bouquet, orange pith mixed with grapefruit and light waxy scents, again, detailed and focused, demonstrating assiduous use of oak (although it does become more prominent with aeration). The palate is well-balanced with a pleasant rondeur on the entry, smooth and more honeyed than…

Dive In: Cantenac Brown 1978-2018 (Oct 2022)

The 2015 Cantenac Brown displays more red fruit compared directly with the 2016: raspberry and wild strawberry intermingled with sous-bois and tobacco, violet aromas emerging with time. Lovely focus here, though not the panache of the following vintage. The palate is beginning to loosen up with lithe tannins, fleshy and harmonious, tart red cherries, allspice…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

A rich, exotic wine, the 2015 Cantenac Brown is simply stunning. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, licorice and leather all flesh out in this ample, voluptuous Margaux. A rush of super-ripe dark cherry, plum, violet, lavender and sweet French oak builds as this plush, explosive wine shows off its bold personality. The 2015 is quite…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru has a knockout bouquet of intense, beautifully defined citrus fruit, orange blossom and licorice aromas. The palate is very well balanced, the 25% new oak neatly folded into energetic citrus fruit that dovetails into a very concentrated, persistent finish. This comes highly recommended.
