1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Moderately saturated ruby. Aromatically pure aromas of raspberry, pepper, woodsmoke and brown spices. Thick and sweet, with flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes with very fine but substantial tannins that are nicely buffered by the wine material. Long and spicy on the aftertaste. The yield here was about 35 hectoliters per hectare, vs. a solid…

1998 and 1997 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2000)

Full red-ruby. Bright, floral aromas of raspberry, black plum, black cherry and leather. Supple but a bit sullen in the mouth, with unforthcoming flavors of black cherry and shoe polish. Seems a bit less thoroughly ripe than the ’97 Hermitage Pied de la Cote. Rather awkward today. A sample of the same wine from a…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 d’Yquem is a vintage that I have awarded perfect scores to in the past however, neither bottles merit that on this occasion. The first bottle feels scalped, so much so that a second bottle is checked. This has a very refined and sophisticated bouquet with wild honey, brioche, vanilla pod and light orange…

Masseto Retrospective at the Country Music Hall of Fame (Jan 2020)

The thread of potent, warm-vintage Massetos continues with the 2009. Dense, opulent and unctuous to its core, the 2009 is a decidedly flamboyant wine with huge fruit density and equally big tannins. Black plum, bittersweet chocolate, menthol and dark spices all build with time in the glass. The 2009 is not at all subtle, but…

Tuscany Part 2: The Tuscan Coast, More Supertuscans et al (Sep 2012)

Good full ruby. Superripe, pure aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, minerals, milk chocolate and exotic spices. Superconcentrated, rich and seamless, offering explosive sweetness but also great verve, thanks to bright acidity that provides wonderful lift and clarity to the blackberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors. Finishes with ultra-suave tannins and a kaleidoscope of violet and…

1997 and 1996 Sauternes (Jul 1999)

Pale color. Ripe but a bit swampy, with some SO2 to be absorbed. Very sweet and soft; ultimately rather diffuse, even a bit sugary. But certainly fat and concentrated. Finishes quite sweet. Could not be more different in style from the ’97.
