Cellar Favorite: Raiding the Cellar at Inspire Napa Valley (Aug 2022)

Christophe Roumier’s 2009 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Bussière 1er Cru is a typical wine for the year. Rich, radiant and luscious, it offers up gorgeous fruit to play off its undeniable Morey structure. The purity of the fruit and textures is just stunning. At thirteen years of age, the 2009 remains a very young, vibrant…

The 2009 Red Burgundies from Bottle (Apr 2012)

The 2009 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de La Bussière is a delicious wine at this level. Dark red berries, menthol, spices and licorice wrap around the palate in this surprisingly large-scaled, generous Clos de la Bussière. My sense is that the 2009 will enjoyed a long drinking window.

2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

Medium red. Superripe aromas of cherry liqueur, chocolate and wild herbs. Less sweet in the mouth than the nose would suggest, with a medicinal reserve that’s not a bad sign for a 2009. A bit chunky today but the long, ripely tannic finish suggests that this will reward several years of patience.

2014 Brunello di Montalcino and 2013 Riservas (March 2019)

Vibrant medium-deep red. Expressive, complex nose combines raspberry, strawberry, and violet, plus hints of truffle and dried herbs. Lovely extract and flavor intensity for its color, offering a strong savory quality to its strawberry, floral and herb flavors. A stylish, midweight Brunello with a seamless texture, uncanny sweet juiciness and outstanding inner-mouth energy that builds…

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru feels a little disjointed on the nose, brambly red fruit, quite earthy, just a touch of reduction here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite solid and dense, initially hemmed in but it responds positively with aeration and develops some lovely earthy red fruit towards its structured finish. It…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is raised in 25% new oak and is almost entirely made from whole bunches. That stem addition gently guides the aromatics here, imparting a subtle pepperiness and earthiness that combines deftly with the vivid black fruit; perhaps there is less blue fruit here compared to other Bonnes-Mares this vintage. The…
