Past Becomes Now: Lafite-Rothschild 1874-1982 (Apr 2024)

The 1966 Lafite-Rothschild has always been one of my picks from this decade, rivaling even the slightly under-par 1961. This is a decent bottle, though it comes across as somewhat untamed on the nose compared directly with the 1952. Dark black fruit, cedar and pencil-shaving aromas develop with time. But the palate is refined and…

Value Through Time: Burgundy 1932-2016 (Aug 2021)

The 2007 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was served from magnum. Quite rich and honeyed on the nose, it offers some tempting brioche and grilled almond and coconut scents with time. The palate is well balanced with good weight. A sensual Corton-Charlemagne that is texturally satisfying, although it was surpassed by a magnum of the following vintage…

2008 and 2007 White Burgundies (Sep 2009)

(aged in two-thirds new oak) Ripe peach, apple and rocks on the nose, complicated by a whiff of fennel. Tighter and more imploded than the Perrieres, showing less obvious volume today and a distinctly cool quality. This very rocky style has a structure like a red wine. Very long and firm on the aftertaste. Colin…

The Best New Wines from Spain, Part 1 (Sep 2010)

Glass-staining purple. Exotic, pungent scents of cherry-cola, potpourri and white pepper, plus a sexy note of sandalwood. Very fresh in the mouth, with intense, floral-accented black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter and spicier with aeration. Blends vivacity and power smoothly, finishing with nervy mineral cut and a lingering note of spicecake. Like…

Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2008)

Good deep ruby-red. Wild aromas of cassis, game, leather and licorice, plus a whiff of band-aid. The distinct wildness carries through on the palate, where the dark berry and game flavors are framed by juicy acidity. This is pretty sauvage, and the finish is a bit edgy with acids and tannins.

Chile: Thinking Outside The Box (Jun 2023)

The 2020 Cinsault Las Curvas Parcela Única from Guarilihue in the Itata Valley spent a winter in concrete vats. Ruby-red in hue. Faint eucalyptus aromas are accompanied by notes of pomegranate. Taut and slim in the mouth, the finely grained tannins are a little rough. A taut, packaged red of intense flavor. Still very young.
