Saturday Morning: Larcis Ducasse 1945-2017 (Oct 2020)

The 2008 Larcis Ducasse has a precocious bouquet that you might mistake for a 2009: kirsch, mint, star anis, black cherries and a touch of Xmas cake. It just comes across a little too strong for my liking and I still find some VA here, perhaps more so than the previous bottle tasted a year…

New Releases from Australia, Part 1 (Jul 2007)

Inky violet. Vibrant, perfumed nose melds blackberry, cassis, kirsch, licorice and dried flowers. On the palate, this shiraz shows an intriguing mix of sweet dark fruit flavors and firmer earth and mineral notes, with big but supple tannins contributing structure. The palate-staining finish features notes of bitter cherry, cured tobacco and high-octane chocolate. Nothing obvious…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Straw-yellow tinged with green and gold. Initially subdued nose hints at lemon curd, then opens with air to reveal tangerine and powdered stone aromas. Densely packed apricot and yellow melon flavors are nicely lifted by bright acids and complicated by a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Finishes long and pure, with a lovely lingering minerality.

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Bright red-ruby. Vibrant nose offers blackberry, licorice, mint and minerals. Juicy, penetrating dark berry and crushed rock flavors lifted by violet. Pure and sweet, with firm acids and calcaire energy contributing grip and clarity. The tannins are firm but not hard. An excellent, ageworthy vintage for this Alain Vauthier property, which faces his Chateau Ausone.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Alluring 2023s and Benchmark 2010s (Nov 2024)

The nose of the 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin is quite evolved, as evidenced by prominent dried red fruits, loamy earth, melted licorice and a flicker of white mushrooms. But the palate isn’t ready for action just yet. Full-bodied, concentrated and packed with ripe tannins, the nuanced 2010 needs more time before it can express its full…

2011 and 2010 Southern Rhone Wines (Jan 2013)

Glass-staining ruby. Heady scents of raspberry liqueur, cherry-cola, Asian spices and potpourri, with a bright mineral overtone. Juicy, incisive and pure, offering vibrant black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a suave spicecake nuance. Completely stains the palate while showing superb energy and clarity. The gently tannic finish refuses to let go and strongly echoes the…
