Focus on Champagne (Nov 2003)

Flamboyantly rich aromas of orange zest, nut oils, toast, toffee, mushroom, macadamia nut, underbrush and bonfire. Large-scaled, superripe and very rich, with a wonderfully seamless, pliant texture and a deep hazelnutty quality. Huge, slow-building, thick finish hints at great ripeness.

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Valandraud is sensational. Stunning in its delineation and with sheer energy, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice and lavender all come alive in the glass. In 2019, Valandraud is a towering, statuesque wine that captures all the best the vintage had to offer….

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Valandraud has a generous and oaky bouquet with blueberry and blackberry commingling with vanillary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, velvety smooth in texture lending it a modern sheen, overtly oaky although I feel there is sufficient fruit behind it. This is defined by the winemaking rather than the terroir…

Bols Blue to Bordeaux: Barde-Haut, Clos l’Église & Poesia (Jun 2022)

The 2010 Clos l’Eglise is more closed and introverted on the nose compared to the previous vintage, but affording it 15-20 minutes in the glass, it reveals beguiling redcurrant, raspberry coulis, rose petal and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more weight than the 2009. This is vibrant and surprisingly spicy,…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Good bright, deep red. Crystallized black raspberry, cherry, bitter chocolate and graphite minerality on the expressive nose. Dense, sweet and very deep, with hugely rich flavors of red and darker berries, espresso and bitter chocolate. As creamy as this is, there’s no shortage of energy or underlying tannic support. Very long and lush on the…
