The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Bright ruby. Sexy, ripe nose combines cassis, Cuban cigar tobacco, licorice and minerals. Sweet, tactile and intense, with concentrated, sharply delineated flavors of dark fruits and minerals. Densely packed, ripe and deep. Offers a lovely combination of silky texture, firm structure and the aromatic lift and nuance of the vintage’s best examples. Should age gracefully…

Where the Heart Is: Ducru-Beaucaillou 1934-2018 (Jul 2022)

The 2003 Ducru-Beaucaillou, picked 15-25 September and matured in 90% new oak, has a ripe and opulent bouquet with lavish black fruit, fresh fig, dates and a touch of liquorice, though here is no sense of over-maturity here. It is fresher than a lot of ‘03s that I have recently tasted. The palate is well…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Ruby-red. Sexy nose offers superripe currant, raspberry, graphite and coconut. Lush, very rich and fine-grained, with an almost confectionery sweetness and thickness for this St. Julien. Atypically powerful on the back end, but not hard. Bruno Borie took over direction of this property with the 2003 and immediately switched to a heavier bottle with a…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Moderately saturated red-ruby. Cassis, black raspberry and tarry new oak on the nose. Bright, fresh and firm in the mouth, with dark fruit flavors supported by a solid spine of acids and tannins.

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.63 pH; 68 IPT; 13.1% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of red cherries macerated in alcohol, leather, lead pencil and sweet spices. Very forward and open-knit on the palate, with earthy black fruit flavors complemented by coffee, licorice and bay…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good red-ruby. Full-blown aromas of currant, black cherry, roasted meat, lead pencil and leather. Fat, rich and compellingly sweet, with suggestions of tobacco and meat. Finishes with very fine tannins that coat the teeth. Seems quite accessible already, but certainly has enough freshness to evolve in bottle over the next decade or more.
