Blind Vision: 2015 Burgundy Red & White (Nov 2018)

The 2015 Pommard Les Chaponnières 1er Cru has a modest, conservative bouquet of pleasant, earthy red berry fruit laced with graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin and well-judged acidity; a little “gourmand” toward the finish, with a savory aftertaste. Drink sooner rather than later. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a discrete reduction on the nose with orange blossom and light peachy scents. Very perfumed and quite floral. The palate is well-defined with a fine bead of acidity, plenty of matière with a gentle build. The minerally undertow becomes more evident towards the finish. Quite a multi-faceted Bâtard-Montrachet, this…

2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru, which is a new long-term contract for Drouhin, is lucid ruby in color. It has a fresh raspberry and crushed strawberry nose, touches of mint and allspice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It feels well structured, with good backbone, maybe…

Drouhin’s Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc: 1979-2016 (Feb 2019)

Pale medium yellow. Peach and acacia flower dominate the nose, with notes of minerals and spices emerging with air. Quite round and sweet on entry, then rich and rather powerful in the middle palate, boasting terrific intensity and an element of salty minerality. Today the wine’s fruit is slightly overshadowed by youthful oak but there’s…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2014 Haut-Brion is an exceptionally beautiful and vivid wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, tobacco and menthol are some of the notes that run through the 2014. Just as it did from barrel, the 2014 boasts tons of opulence, intensity and richness. Dried flowers, tobacco, menthol, licorice and…

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Haut-Brion has a generous, quite rich bouquet, a little leathery with just a suggestion of menthol that I have remarked upon in previous bottles. It is attractive but quite open and forward for such a young wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a menthol-tinged entry that sets you up for a very medicinal…
