Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes has 20% whole bunches this year. This is nicely composed on the nose with pure, expressive, well-defined red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, and the 30% new oak is neatly enmeshed, just losing a little concentration in the final third as it tapers in slightly. But it will fill it…

Never a Dull Vintage in the Northern Rhône (Dec 2022)

Deep ruby. Spice-accented aromas of blackberry, violet and smoky minerals, with a hint of olive in the background. Concentrated yet lively on the palate, offering pliant dark berry, floral pastille and cracked pepper flavors and a salty touch of olive paste. Fleshes out steadily with air and shows fine clarity and appealing sweetness on the…

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Marsannay Rouge is a mixture of Domaine and négoce wines (from Pataille’s father). Initially, it is a little timid, but it opens nicely with aeration, bringing flinty black fruit with the 80% whole bunches imparting a light pepperiness. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, fresh and vibrant, finishing with a touch of…

The 2022 Marsannay La Montagne has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, maybe a tad riper than the Clemengeots, though without the same focus. The balanced palate has a pastille-like purity on the black cherry and blueberry entry. There’s a bit of gas to contend with on the finish that has…

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté Charmes Aux Prêtres came across as a bit musty on the nose. The palate is rather bitter compared to the other cuvées and does not quite deliver the precision expected on the finish. I will not judge based on this bottle.

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village offers slightly meaty red fruit comingling with scorched earth and tobacco. The palate is marked by fine-grain tannins, but this is very fresh with orange rind decorating its surprisingly structured on the finish. Very fine.
