Written in the Stars: Bordeaux 1865-2020 (Dec 2023)

The 2009 Léoville Las Cases is poured blind and just soars in the glass. What stunned me was the tension and precision on the nose, tropes that I do not find with many Left Bank wines in this vintage. It has fabulous mineralité with that crushed stone element more pronounced than ever. The palate has…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(76% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, and 9% cabernet franc; ph 3.65; IPT 70; 13.4% alcohol; 65% new oak) Purple ruby. Initially closed nose opens slowly with air to reveal blackcurrant, blueberry, tobacco and minerals. Then remarkably supple and pliant in the mouth, with extremely sweet red and black fruit flavors complicated by graphite, tobacco and…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Léoville Las-Cases simply delivers on the nose with intense blackberry, wild hedgerow, graphite and crushed stone aromas on the nose. You would put this down as a Pauillac if served blind, unsurprising given that it borders that appellation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, silky smooth in texture with immense depth. It…

The 2009 Léoville Las-Cases is a wine that I believe I misread blind, finding it uncharacteristically high-toned and monotone. I believe the note pertaining to BI Wines & Spirits’ tasting more representative. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

2008 and 2007 Red Burgundies (Mar 2010)

Good bright medium red. Cherry liqueur, black raspberry and smoke on the sweet nose, along with some spicy oak. Offers more volume and breadth than the Echezeaux without any impression of weight thanks to piquant underlying minerality. Wonderfully silky and suave wine, finishing with building tannins, superb length and a strong impression of sucrosite

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Very deep ruby-red. Pungent, inky, nutty aromas of blackcurrants and minerals; very sexy oak treatment gives the nose a wonderful sweetness. Big, minerally, and shapely, with lovely purity of dark berry flavor. Has clarity and grip, but not quite the richness of the ’95. The tannins build in the glass, but are in harmony with…
