Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2013 Lynch-Bages showed a little volatility initially, although this seems to disappear with aeration. It displays red fruit, kirsch and just a touch of fig aromas. Strange for this vintage! The palate has commendable concentration but becomes a little monotone in the glass and lacks a bit of joie-de-vivre. Tasted at the Lynch-Bages vertical…

2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

The 2013 Lynch-Bages is unusual but also quite pretty. In this vintage the flavors are quite dark, with distinct dark red/purplish overtones. Dried flowers, cloves and sage are some of the notes that develop with time in the glass. The 2013 finishes with lovely length and precision. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot,…

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Full ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tightly wound but essentially pliant, with smooth black fruit and licorice flavors complicated by leather and fresh herbs. Classically dry and very Pauillac. Finishes with supple but firm tannins.

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2007 Lynch-Bages is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, raspberry coulis, loam and melted tar aromas, quintessentially Pauillac and gaining delineation in the glass. There is just a scintilla of sur-maturité when I return to this wine ten minutes later. The palate is medium-bodied and precocious with sweet black fruit laced with tobacco and…

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 d’Angludet is the first vintage with partial aging in clay amphora (30%); around 35% of the barrels were new. I must confess that I like the aromatics here: macerated red cherries, crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit, a little earthiness and a hint of leather. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine…
