2012 Red Burgundy: Against All Odds (Jan 2014)

Savory herbs, wild flowers, mint and black fruit all take shape in the 2012 Pommard Les Rugiens. The aromatics are nicely lifted, while there is plenty of vintage 2012 fruit and tannin to fill out the wine’s frame. Here it is the wine’s balance that impresses most of all.

2006 and 2005 Red Burgundies (Mar 2008)

Good medium red. Lovely floral lift to the sweet red cherry, berry, mineral and orange skin aromas. Very suave, pure and scented wine with the minerality and lift of a top Vosne-Romanee. Finishes long and gripping, with firm but supple tannins. A superb showing, and very much in the style of the best ’06s.

Picture This: Domaine Henri Gouges 1945 – 2016 (Oct 2018)

The 2010 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru is more intense on the nose compared to the 2009; also earthier and perhaps without the same comely charm. Medium red. Reduced, musky aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and game. Sweet and bright in the mouth; youthfully tight but with intense red fruit, spice and licorice flavors nicely perked up by integrated acidity. Offers excellent volume and breadth without any undue weight. The bright, rising finish features suave tannins and lingering spice and licorice notes….

The 2010 Red Burgundies (Feb 2012)

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Les Pruliers boasts good fleshiness and juiciness. This is an up-front, decidedly overt style loaded with blue and black fruit. Firm tannins add support, while expressive floral notes give the finish an attractive lift. Here, too, the wine is surprisingly approachable.

2004 Barolo: The Cream Rises to The Top (May 2015)

The 2004 Barolo Monprivato is utterly magnificent in its freshness, nuance and delineation. Sweet floral notes meld effortlessly into hard candy, wild flowers, rose petal and pomegranate, all supported by super-fine tannins. I very much admire the sense of energy here. The 2004 is striking today, but it is also quite young. Readers who are…
