2012 and 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras (Jan 2014)

Brilliant ruby-red. Aromas of dark berries, spicecake, licorice and potpourri on the highly perfumed nose. Stains the palate with energetic black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, with a zesty mineral element giving spine to the wine. The floral quality comes back strong on the finish, which features supple tannins and extremely persistent spiciness.

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Vivid purple. Spicy cassis, violet and minerals on the nose. Fresh and lively but a bit thin, offering tangy dark berry and floral flavors and a kick of minerality. Lively and brisk, with good clarity and sweetness but not filled in; this should be drunk soon after release.

The Best New Wines from Spain (Sep 2006)

Dark violet. Wild, pungent aromas of red and dark berries, candied cherry, blood orange, dark chocolate, clove and cinnamon, with notes of vanilla and fresh rose. Very firmly built, with impressively deep, sweet red fruit flavors that are almost liqueur-like in their power and breadth. Intensely spicy and sweet on the long, succulent finish, the…

Central And Southern Italy: A Wine Lover’s Paradise (Feb 2013)

The 2009 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana is quite pretty in this vintage. As always, it is one of the more immediate wines in the range. The typically firm tannins are nicely balanced by an expressive, plush core of fruit that fills out the wine’s broad shouldered frame nicely. Dried flowers, savory herbs and a hint…

Exploring the Best of Central and Southern Italy (June 2011)

The estate’s 2008 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera Vigna di Don Peppino is stunning. Layers of seamless dark fruit emerge from this dazzling, pure red. The Don Peppino reveals impeccable balance of fruit and structure. Here, too, the tannins are present but balanced beautifully by the sheer pedigree and explosiveness of the fruit. In 2008 the Don…

New Releases from Southern Italy (Mar 2011)

Good, full ruby-red. Some superripe notes of roasted redcurrant and balsamic plum on the nose are nicely lifted by sour red cherry and a light floral element. Creamy and sweet, with sound acids giving freshness to the very rich, almost liqueur-like red fruit flavors. The wine’s firm tannins and acids have not yet harmonized, giving…
