Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Clos du Marquis needs a little more precision on the nose, dark berry fruit, cedar, touches of sage and crushed iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite pliant tannins. Gentle grip, but there is certainly structure evident here with quite a tannic finish. This will need time in the cellar. Tasted…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 is an exuberant, plush Clos du Marquis packed with inky, dark fruit. All the signatures of Saint-Julien and this estate are all amplified in the glass. Licorice, lavender, spice and mocha develop, adding gorgeous layers to this decidedly extroverted Clos du Marquis. I haven't always been thrilled with how Clos du Marquis ages,…

The Pendulum Swings: 2012 Brunello di Montalcino (Jan 2023)

The color of the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli shows no sign of decline, as a seductive blend of crushed black cherries and plums, tobacco, cocoa and hints of flowery underbrush form its bouquet. This is finessed and delicate in feel, casting ripe wild berry fruits and sultry minerals across a core of nervous acidity,…

Brunello di Montalcino: The 2012 Brunellos & 2011 Riservas (Mar 2017)

Good full red. Pure mineral driven aromas of raspberry and red cherry, with hints of licorice and tar. Nicely delineated and sweet with a strong raspberry quality dominating on the palate, this is more autere but very similar to the entry level wine in its aroma and flavor profile. The finish is long and offers…

The Pendulum Swings: 2012 Brunello di Montalcino (Jan 2023)

Crushed strawberries, herbal tea, balsamic spice and tobacco form a sweetly inviting bouquet as the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino opens in the glass. It’s pleasantly round, with a bitter twang of mocha and sour citrus up front that gives way to mineral-tinged red berries. The 2012 finishes with a nervous feel, leaving the mouth watering,…

Brunello di Montalcino: The 2012 Brunellos & 2011 Riservas (Mar 2017)

Bright red. Vibrant high strung Brunello with crisp aromas of red berries and minerals lifted by a note of white pepper. A great deal more plush and silky in texture than usual, with minerally red berry flavors showing energy and focus. One of the best classico young Brunellos from Castiglion del Bosco I remember tasting.
