The 2013 and 2012 Northern Rhône Wines (Feb 2015)

Vivid ruby. Intense aromas of cassis, blackberry, olive paste and floral pastilles, with a smoky mineral topnote. Pliant and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering vibrant dark berry liqueur flavors and an enlivening note of black pepper. Finishes long and spicy, with excellent focus and energy and dusty tannins that add shape and grip.

Tuscany Part 1: Chianti, Vino Nobile and Supertuscans (Jul 2012)

Deep ruby. Cola-like notes complicate aromas of black cherry, rhubarb and cocoa. Ripe, smooth and dense, with velvety, seamless flavors of black cherry, plum and spicy oak. Finishes spicy, vibrant and long. This is very impressive but shows less sangiovese perfume than usual.

Tuscany 2009 and 2010: A World of Opposites (Jun 2012)

The 2009 Cepparello, usually one of the more restrained wines in Tuscany, is huge in this vintage. It blasts onto the palate with tons of richness, power and depth. A highly complex, expansive bouquet evokes cherry liqueur, pipe tobacco, incense, vanilla and woodsmoke, accompanied by hints of five-spice powder and licorice in the background. Sweet, expansive and seamless in texture, offering…

Bartolo Mascarello 1955 to…from Magnum (Jul 2023)

The 2008 Barolo (magnum) is a stunner, as it has always been. Intensely aromatic, silky and layered, the 2008 is so elegant. I especially admire its vibrancy and overall freshness, both signatures of the year. Plum, dried flowers, crushed rocks and lavender build in an undeniably sexy Barolo that hits all the right notes.

Bartolo Mascarello Retrospective: 1958-2010 (Nov 2016)

The 2008 Barolo is once again superb. The striking aromatics that are so typical of the year make a strong first impression. Delicate and silky on the palate, yet also deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2008 is pure seduction. A hint of grip from the tannins appears on the finish, but with some air,…
