Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2011)

(from fruit picked beginning on October 18, about a month later than the 2007 harvest): Good medium red. Aromas of sour cherry, licorice, menthol and savory soil. Silky, juicy and intense but quite imploded and understated today. In fact, this is brutally closed, with substantial tongue-coating tannins that will only be resolved with long cellaring….

2010 Barolo: Flying High Again (Jan 2014)

The 2009 Barolo Monprivato is the deepest of the four Barolos. About a month before bottling Mauro Mascarello added the Ca’d’ Morissio cask to the Monprivato, which should have had a positive effect, as it had in the past, but I have yet to see evidence of that here.

Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2013)

Moderately saturated medium red. Compelling early perfume of strawberry, black cherry, licorice and brown spices. Silky and seamless on entry, then perfumed and light on its feet in the middle, with captivating complexity to the flavors of sweet red berries, earth and minerals. Harmonious acidity gives shape to the middle palate and extends the flavors…

The 2012 Red Burgundies from Bottle (Mar 2015)

Full medium red. Highly aromatic nose combines redcurrant, black raspberry, mellow spices, leather, menthol, smoke and candied flowers. Sweet, pliant and deep, offering a fine-grained texture and a touch of medicinal reserve to its black raspberry and spice flavors. Finishes suave and firm, with lingering sweetness and a firm spine for mid-term aging.

Bartolo Mascarello 1955 to…from Magnum (Jul 2023)

Still embryonic, Mascarello’s 2010 Barolo (magnum) shows all the classicism it did when I first tasted it from cask many years ago. There is a feeling of crystalline purity and translucence here that is simply captivating. This is Nebbiolo and Barolo in all its glory in what has turned out to be an epic vintage…

Bartolo Mascarello Retrospective: 1958-2010 (Nov 2016)

From the moment we put together this tasting, I knew the 2010 Barolo had to be in the lineup because of its historical significance. It is arguably the greatest wine ever made here. Although naturally very young, the 2010 is super-expressive and also one of the clear highlights of the evening. All the elements simply…
