A Vintage with Issues: Burgundy 2021 (Oct 2025)

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a sophisticated bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, tobacco and undergrowth scents with discrete use of whole bunches. Fine delineation despite a touch of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit laced with balsamic. Quite strict and mineral driven, clamming up somewhat towards the finish. However,…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Full ruby-red. Initially mute nose opened slowly to reveal complex aromas of raspberry, plum, hot stones, tobacco, saddle leather and toffee. Really explodes on the palate; lush and minerally, with a compelling note of woodsmoke and firm acidity. Wonderful combination of sweetness and vibrancy. Finishes very long and subtle, with firm tannins.

Irrespective…

Stand and Deliver: 2001 Sauternes (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Château d’Yquem at 20 years old: a legend? It certainly received much adulation on release. As a reminder, it was picked over five tries from September 18 to October 23 and has 150g/L of residual sugar. Limpid gold in color, as you would expect, it looks quite youthful for a Sauternes of this…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Talbot was corked on the first bottle. The second has a refined and focused bouquet, with more black fruit than its peers. Cedar and light minty notes impart a Pauillac-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine delineation, lovely poise and a sorbet-fresh, high-toned finish. This appears to have meliorated…
