2021 Bordeaux: L’Enfant Terrible (Feb 2024)

Rich and explosive in feel, the 2021 Cheval Blanc is outrageously beautiful. For the first time since 2011, the Grand Vin is more than 50% Cabernet Franc. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and mocha are all amplified in this potent, luxurious Cheval Blanc. Polished, seamless tannins wrap it all together. This is…

2+2=5: Bordeaux 2021 In Bottle (Feb 2024)

The 2021 Cheval Blanc, the first vintage since 2011 with over half Cabernet Franc, has a very deep color in the glass. The nose is well-defined with tightly coiled red fruit and iodine scents, graphite and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins, an unerring symmetry and a silky smooth finish….

2010 Red Burgundies (Mar 2013)

Good bright, dark red. Subtle scents of strawberry, raspberry and earth. Broad and fairly powerful, offering more breadth and flesh (this parcel dates back more than a century) but less early sweetness than the Vosne-Romanee Champs-Perdrix. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins that call for a few years of patience.

The 2010 Red Burgundies (Feb 2012)

The 2010 Savigny-les-Beaune La Dominode is absolutely fabulous in this vintage. It boasts gorgeous fleshiness in its dark red fruit. Mint, freshly cut flowers and spices are some of the nuances that develop in the glass. The Dominode is ultimately about energy and textural brilliance, both of which it has in spades. I loved it….

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Pichon Baron is in a gorgeous spot right now. Aromatically expressive and open, the 2005 is so expressive. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers, mocha and sweet red cherry fruit all meld together in a creamy, wonderfully expressive Pauillac. A long, persistent finish with terrific saline energy rounds things out in style….

Looking The Part: Pichon-Baron 1953 – 2015 (Jan 2019)

The 2005 Pichon-Baron is showing impressively after 13 years. It boasts intense black cherry, raspberry coulis, graphite and mineral scents that gain intensity in the glass. There is nuance and detail here, perhaps more than any previous release of this Second Growth. The masculine palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and an insistent grip in…
