Chablis 2023 & 2024: Five Baskets (Jul 2025)

The 2023 Chablis Village has an attractive nose with yellow plum and Granny Smith aromas. This is cohesive and has good tension. The palate is well balanced with hints of dried honey and passionfruit. It’s tropical toward the finish that might displease purists, though this does have tension throughout. Tasted blind at the BIVB offices…

Santa Barbara: California’s Undiscovered Jewel (Aug 2024)

The 2022 Grüner Veltliner John Sebastiano is a worthy follow-up to the spectacular 2021. Soaring and vertical in feel, with stunning balance, the 2022 has so much to offer. Lemon oil, crushed rocks, mint and a lightly bitter (but not unpleasant) accent all race across the palate. The long, sustained finish is sublime.

The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is bright, sensual and impeccably balanced. Red berry fruit, blood orange, sweet spice, tobacco and rose petal accents all build in a sensual, silky Mt. Veeder Cabernet that delivers tons of class. The 2018 is a gorgeous wine and every bit as impressive as it was last year .

The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)

Healthy dark red. Wilder and deeper on the nose than the Charmes, offering scents of raspberry, menthol and game. Sweet and flavorful in the mouth, showing a surprisingly supple texture for a 2013 grand cru. This wine was almost painfully imploded a year ago from barrel but boasts terrific breadth and grain today. Finishes suave…

From the Vault: Realm 2005-2018 (Mar 2022)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is the most refined of the first three vintages off this site. The early wines were more bombastic, but by 2016 winemaker Benoit Touquette found a way to tame some of the site’s natural intensity while still capturing plenty of the power that is such a Realm signature. Black…

2017 & 2018 Napa Valley In Depth (Jan 2020)

A wine of tremendous depth and explosive energy, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Moonracer Realm Estate is just fabulous. Inky blue/purplish fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cedar infuse the 2016 with tremendous character. Powerful and yet refined, the Moonracer is a winner in 2016. It is also one of my personal favorites, and that leads…
