Cellar Favorite: 2009 & 2010 Cos d’Estournel (Feb 2025)

The 2009 is a Saint-Estèphe lauded in some quarters upon release, anointed with perfect scores, albeit not from myself. From my introduction in barrel with then estate manager, Jean-Guillaume Prats, the 2009 felt over-endowed, a wine predesigned to flutter its lashes during en primeur, one that equated sheer power with quality. I last drank this…

2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Fourrier’s 2011 Morey-St. Denis Clos Solon wafts from the glass with sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, savory herbs and mint. A delicate, fragrant wine, the 2011 looks to be a delicious, tasty Burgundy to drink pretty much upon release and for at least a few years thereafter.

2011 Red Burgundies (Jan 2013)

Bright medium red. Lovely lift and precision to the aromas of red cherry and redcurrant. Juicy and on the lean side, offering good fruit intensity and a touch of smoky minerality. Fresh on the finish.

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2007)

Good full, deep red. Slightly high-toned aromas of herbs, licorice, menthol and flowers, with a whiff of leather. Supple, broad and dry, with plum and menthol flavors along with a slightly artificial floral element. Finishes rather austere and dry. A classically styled Barolo that strikes me as a tad rustic.

Santa Barbara: Out of Many, One (Aug 2025)

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate is very shut down and tightly coiled today, hesitant to express much beyond a brooding, powerful tannic structure. Black sage, lavender and pomegranate coyly sizzle up from the glass with much coaxing. This needs considerable time to flesh out and put on some weight. Old school all the way.
