2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Alter Ego is a huge, dense wine. Ripe, exotic and packed to the core, Alter Ego makes a convincing first impression. Time in the glass brings out floral accents and redder tonalities of fruit. Partial aging in foudres has introduced and element of rigor and tension here that is so alluring in the…

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Alter Ego de Palmer is delineated and focused on the nose with blackberry, cedar and graphite scents. More austere yet still complex and one with the most cerebral Margaux aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite saline and peppery, firm and insistent grip with quiet assertive tannins on the finish….

Power and Energy: The 2018 and 2017 Northern Rhônes (Apr 2020)

Saturated ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, allspice and pungent flowers. Supple, appealingly sweet red and blue fruit preserve flavors gain energy with air, and a bright mineral element adds back-end lift. Vertical Tasting of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (Aug 2011)

(72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 9% cabernet franc; pH 3.68; IPT 64; 12.4% alcohol; 88% new oak; 95% selection for the grand vin): Very dark, fully saturated ruby to the rim. Deep, brooding, rich aromas of blackberry, violet, milk chocolate, black pepper, cedar and incense; sexy and captivating. Bright and focused on entry, then…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Sappy redcurrant and spice nose. Bright, fruity and juicy in the mouth; firmly built and fairly intensely flavored, but the tannins seem slightly dry in comparison to the ’96.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Reticent nose combines currant, nuts, and shoe polish. More tightly wrapped than the Armailhac, but also larger and more powerfully structured. Seems a bit more rustic than the ’96 Clerc-Milon. Finishes with very good length and tongue-coating tannins.
