2010 Red Burgundies (Jan 2012)

(made from purchased wine): Medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate. Sweet and fairly large-scaled in the middle, and a bit exotic, with soft flavors of redcurrant and spices. Finishes with substantial fine-grained tannins but could use more lift. Flashy wine, like lipstick, notes Prost.

The 2013 Red Burgundies (Jan 2015)

Bright, full red. Deep aromas and flavors of dark fruits, violet, mocha and truffley underbrush. Fat, sweet and rich; full and sharply delineated, combining subtle earthy nuances and captivating floral high notes. Finishes with serious but suave tannins and terrific energy and length. The acidity of the 2013s will slow down their development in bottle,…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels of 45- and 80-year-old vines on much stonier soils than the Charmes-Chambertin. This has a knockout nose of brambly black fruit, cassis and crushed stone aromas that gain intensity with every swirl of the glass. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and very precise and…

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a delightful, well-defined bouquet with pure dark berry fruit, just a touch of reduction, yet you can tell the caliber behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with a harmonious, creamy-textured opening, well judged acidity, very good Clos-de-Bèze spine with a sapid finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018…

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Whites – Blind (Aug 2021)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose, although it is nothing to get too worried about. I think it has exceptional mineralité covered up by its youth. The medium-bodied palate is taut, fresh and quite saline, with a fine bead of acidity and some vanilla-y oak toward the very saline…

2017 White Burgundy: Quantity, Quality and Great Charm (Sep 2018)

Deep aromas of mirabelle, spices and iodiney minerality. The fattest and largest of these ’17s, both more tactile and sweeter than the Cabotte. Much easier to taste today as well, owing to its ripe yellow fruit flavors. But this also shows more energy than the Cabotte and finishes with a serious tannic spine and the…
