The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Red-ruby. Cool aromas of dark berries, camphor, licorice and mint. Juicy and on the lean side, with some sweet berry flavors but modest flesh and depth. Conveys a slight overripe/underripe quality and finishes with slightly drying tannins, but still a solid early showing for this chateau.

Checking in on the 1998 Barolos (Feb 2009)

The 1998 Monprivato from Giuseppe Mascarello perfectly embodies the quality of the vintage. This is a relatively slender, accessible Monprivato, yet all of the elements are perfectly in balance. The sweet aromatics meld seamlessly into a soft palate of fruit framed by ripe, silky tannins. The 1998 is a great introduction to Monprivato, and is…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2002)

Brick-red. Aromas of plum, strawberry, raspberry, dried flowers and marzipan. Sweet and silky on entry, then youthfully brisk in the middle, with nicely integrated acids keeping the fruit under wraps today. Not a particularly large-scaled Barolo but perfumed, round and nicely balanced, with solid structure. Finishes long, subtle and sweet, with suaver tannins than the…

2007 and 2005 Sauternes and Barsacs (Jul 2008)

Full yellow-gold. Expressive aromas of pineapple, coconut, sweet vanillin oak and spices. Then wonderfully thick, fat and sweet, with the exotic coconut character carrying through in the mouth. Finishes saline and powerful, with palate-staining flavors of pineapple, coconut and spicy oak. Conveys a strong impression of solidity.

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Medium-deep red. Redcurrant, currant leaf, graphite and spices on the nose. Fleshy and sweet, with nicely concentrated, moderately dense cherry, licorice, cedar and mineral flavors. Very sauvignon. Finishes fresh, with a slightly medicinal quality and somewhat austere tannins.

Pol Roger’s 2018 Brut Rosé is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper all grace this tasty, mid-weight Rosé. The 2018 can be enjoyed as an apéritif, but it also has the substance to pair well with a variety…
