2010 and 2009 White Burgundies (Sep 2011)

(aged entirely in one-year-old barrels): Aromas of mirabelle, clove and smoky minerality. Uncompromisingly dry and quite powerful, even a bit youthfully aggressive, with peppery lift to the peach and mineral flavors. Strong wine but youthfully inscrutable today, and totally different from the rest of this 2009 collection.

The 2009 Red Burgundies (May 2011)

The 2008 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is a wine I could smell all day. The explosive bouquet literally jumps from the glass, followed by deep, beautifully delineated layers of fruit. This shows terrific concentration and depth, dazzling finesse, and a nicely pointed, direct finish. It is an eternal wine.

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

(bottled in April of 2010): Good full medium red. Pungent aromas of wild red berries and crushed stone complicated by mint and pepper. Juicy and extremely intense but youthfully imploded today, showing a medicinal reserve and a crystallized quality to its sharply delineated fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with serious tannic spine, but the wine’s…

2011 and 2010 Northern Rhone Wines (Mar 2013)

Inky ruby. Aromas and flavors of dark fruit preserves, candied flowers and smoky herbs, with a bright mineral nuance adding lift. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit flavors show serious depth and structure, picking up spiciness and an exotic floral quality on the back half. Chewy tannins give shape and grip to a strikingly long,…

2003 Vintage Ports (Jan 2006)

Bright, saturated ruby. Brooding aromas of bitter cherry, violet and licorice, lifted by a resiny nuance. Then densely packed, concentrated and fresh, with rich, fleshy flavors of kirsch and dark chocolate. Finishes with big, broad, thoroughly ripe tannins and very good lingering black cherry fruit. This is surprisingly easy to taste today but should age…

2008 and 2007 Red Burgundies (Mar 2010)

Very good bright red. Complex but youthfully restrained nose hints at dark raspberry, mocha, herbs and smoke. Quite suave for young Bonnes-Mares, with a slightly medicinal quality to the candied fruit and spice flavors. This has the firm acidity of hard candy and seems more red fruit than usual for this cuvee The tannins arrive…
