Mission Complete: La Mission Haut-Brion 1928–2011 (Sep 2021)

The 1990 La Mission Haut-Brion was always going to lie in the shadow of the previous vintage, but let’s be clear: this is a magnificent, audacious follow-up. The nose might not be blessed with the Swiss-watch precision of the 1989, yet how can you possibly resist the heart-warming scents of roasted chestnuts and morels that…

The 1990 Clarets…To Have and To Hold (Nov 1993)

Very good medium color. Subtle, rich, stony aromas of roasted nuts and superripe plums. Velvety and suave on the palate, with an enticing sweetness. There’s plenty of density here, as well as strong backbone. Powerful, very long finish. Though quite youthful, this should be accessible relatively early for La Mission.

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Good medium ruby. Highly nuanced, expressive nose of raspberry, roasted meat, charred oak, minerals and coffee. Lush, chewy and sweet, with impressive thickness of texture for a ’99. Very ripe and layered. Finishes ripely tannic and very long. Transcends the vintage.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Redcurrant, minerals and spice on the nose. Fresh and juicy in the mouth, with cooler, rather muscular flavors of kirsch, minerals, mint and shoe polish. Quite tight today, and not yet showing much fat or personality, but has the structure and guts to develop in bottle. Finishes firmly tannic.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good full ruby. Sexy aromas of black raspberry liqueur, violet, chocolate, mocha and smoky oak. Dense, fat and large-scaled, with a layered texture and compelling sweetness of dark berry fruit. Very smooth if currently a bit youthfully monolithic. Finishes with substantial mouthcoating tannins that arrive late, allowing the chewy chocolate and mocha flavors to expand…

Noël Verset Cornas 1985-2006 (Jan 2015)

The 2000 Cornas is and an expressive and seductively perfumed wine that displays intense red fruit preserve, potpourri and Indian spice scents and a hint of botanical herbs. Sweet and seamless in texture, it possesses spicy raspberry and floral pastille flavors that put on weight with air. Surprisingly dense for the vintage, which was never…
