Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Roc de Cambes displays far too much new oak on the nose that, at the moment, occludes the terroir profile and fruit (note the same remark in my tasting note from December 2022). The palate is ripe with dense tannins, though predictably, the cooperage dictates this wine and renders it generic on the…

Digging up a Languedoc Treasure: Mas de Daumas Gassac 1978-2022 (Jul 2024)

The medium to full-bodied 1991 Rouge is terrific. Swirling the glass unlocks a pronounced cigar box, dried lavender, sage, dried black fruits and touches of graphite. On the palate, the outstanding 1991 flawlessly merges refreshing acidity, elevated flavor concentration and fine-grained tannins. This one is totally worth the hunt.

The Not So Wild West: Margaret River in the Groove (Sep 2022)

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Diana Madeline is stylish, poised and precise boasting an intense and enticing core of graphite, blackberry, and black olive aromas. Classically structured, there is immense density to the dark, cedary fruit flavour and tannins, with underlying vitality and freshness. A long, tight and sinewy finish bodes well for the future but…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Giscours (Jan 2012)

(62% cabernet sauvignon and 38% merlot; 30.6 g/l dry extract; 13.5% alcohol): Dark ruby with purple tinges. Floral aromas of red berries, minerals, licorice and marzipan. At once dense and suave, with clean, fresh herbal and peppery nuances complicating red berry, chocolate, mineral and cedar flavors and contributing to the wine’s impression of inner-mouth perfume….

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good ruby-red. Lovely lift to the aromas of black fruits, licorice and minerals. Pure, intense and sweet, offering an enticing combination of black fruit, mineral and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes long and sweet, with plenty of tannic structure and a lingering note of bitter chocolate. A juicy, serious wine with some power. This has turned…

Balloons, Mermaids & Margaux: Château Giscours 1938-2023 (Apr 2025)

The 2005 Giscours has far more concentration on the nose than the ’04: blackberry, raspberry, cedar and crushed flowers, with hints of licorice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, boasting plush red fruit, desiccated orange peel and brown spices. This is not a subtle Giscours, but it gives a lot of…
