Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(18.5 hectoliters per hectare; destemmed): Good dark red. Less showy initially than the young-vines cuvée but ultimately far more complex, offering subtle scents of black raspberry, currant, graphite, smoke, soil and spices. Airy and elegant but at the same time very intensely flavored and subtly thick, with its dark berry, smoke and mineral flavors nicely…

Ten Years On: Burgundy 2013 (Oct 2023)

The 2013 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Mont Luisants Blanc 1er Cru has an earthy, white mushroom and waxy nose, missing some freshness and very rustic. The palate is well-balanced, not complex, but definitely less bucolic than the nose. There’s lots of extract here with an almost Germanic dry finish. Some VA here? I would drink bottles…

2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru shows some reduction on the nose that just blurs the edges of the black fruit here, though one can detect a subtle marine influence in the background. The palate is fresh on the entry, fleshy and generous with fine mineralité although, it does not quite have the engaging personality or…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echézeaux, a métayage since 2016, has a vibrant black cherry and cassis bouquet that is rich and opulent, yet still nicely controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity, and quite compact on the back end. The grippy, slightly hard finish will soften during the remainder of its…

2008 and 2007 Red Burgundies (Mar 2010)

Medium red. Lovely rose petal lift to the delicate cherry and mineral aromas. Juicy, spicy, pure and penetrating, with youthfully imploded red berry and floral flavors. This has enough finishing flavor to stand up to its firm tannins. Attractive wine but does it have real grand cru weight and depth?

New Releases from Napa Valley: 2012 and 2013 (Dec 2014)

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cardinale from Cardinale is totally seamless and textured on the palate, with layers of ripe, racy fruit, tons of intensity and an opulent, voluptuous finish that captures the essence of this style to the T. Dark red stone fruits, cinnamon, cedar, tobacco and new leather linger on the creamy finish. Winemaker…
