2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has disarming purity and transparency on the nose, where pressed rose filters through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. Fleshy and quite corpulent compared to other vintages, with a long spicy aftertaste. Excellent.

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru sports a heavy reduction on the nose, which under blind conditions made it difficult to read. The palate is likewise difficult to work out. I must admit to being flummoxed by this wine, trying to peer underneath the reduction to assess the fruit quality. Dismissive at first, given…

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose once it addresses a bit of reduction: pure red berries, orange pith and pressed flower notes. Hints of fig jam emerge with time but do not impede the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, certainly one of the spicier, perhaps…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a very composed bouquet of darker fruit than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques; there are also hints of blood orange and tangerine here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and superb acidity. Quite saline in the mouth, displaying real complexity and nuance toward the finish. Superb.

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St-Jacques 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of beautifully integrated oak, but a very strong licorice scent rather dominates the aromatics upon returning 10 minutes later. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red berry fruit, quite energetic and tensile, displaying satisfying purity and poise toward the sweet and candied, rounded…

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is already showing a little maturity on the rim, possibly due to assiduous stem addition. The nose is open-knit and soft with brambly red fruit, perhaps needing a bit more delineation. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry and quite fleshy in style, with moderate acidity…
