Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Beaune Clos de la Mignotte 1er Cru is a little more ostentatious than the Tuvilains on the nose with cassis and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, quite lush and precocious, sweet though not cloying on the finish. Fine.

Further Inroads Into Burgundy 2020 (May 2022)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has an exotic bouquet with hints of prune filtering through the red cherry and cassis notes. Very opulent. The palate is rounded and caressing, plush and quite decadent. The 40-50% new oak is nicely integrated, though I would like to see more precision on the finish.

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, plus a dusting of dark chocolate and damp undergrowth; gentle and attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Fleshy toward the finish, delivering tart red fruit, this will be one of…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is elegant and refined on the nose, a mixture of blackberry, sous-bois and a light sea spray aroma. It just needs to gel together and it should do during the remainder of its barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Very Morey in style with a…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Santenay Clos Rousseau 1er Cru includes one-third whole cluster. It has a well defined, but more introverted bouquet than the Village Cru, touches of sous-bois and tobacco. This just needs time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, again, very smooth and velvety in texture, very finely judged acidity with a sapid…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Beaune (Dec 2020)

There are five barrels of the 2019 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru, one new, that were racked in the summer. It has a generous and typically quite opulent bouquet, the one-third whole bunch nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, good backbone and a grippy, very nicely focused finish. Bags of freshness locked up…
