Vertical Tasting of Chateau Cheval Blanc (Oct 2011)

(a 53/47 blend of cabernet franc and merlot; 13% alcohol; yield of 45 h/h): Bright red. Pure aromas of strawberry, flowers, soy sauce, espresso and minerals. Then clean and straightforward on the palate, with nicely balanced flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes very long and smooth. A very good Cheval Blanc, bigger than the 1996…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Good full red. Profound, multidimensional nose combines redcurrant, plums, raspberry, cherry, mocha and humus: really quite singular. Wonderful sweetness and depth of flavor; lush but with a firm spine. Already offers compelling inner-mouth perfume, but I suspect this wine will soon close down. Finishes with terrific length and very suave, sweet tannins that coat the…

Vinous Table: The Silver Birch, London, UK (Jul 2021)

The 2005 Canon is an absolute gem and, like many 2005s, is beginning to shed its tannins and become more approachable and terroir-driven. 2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Canon is all brawn and muscle. Chunky tannins give the 2005 a decidedly virile feel. There is plenty of depth and freshness – this is after all one of the very best sites in all of Bordeaux – so the 2005 will hold for many years to come. Dark fruit, leather, smoke, gravel,…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Full ruby-red. Sexy, high-toned nose shows a very sweet maraschino cherry quality. Then juicy and energetic, with a vinosity that almost comes as a shock following the nose. The subtle flavors of currant, graphite and minerals linger nicely.

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Medium red. Roasted currant, lead pencil, grilled nuts, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Smooth, vinous and concentrated, with lovely depth of flavor and ripe acidity for the vintage. Finishes with even tannins and excellent length. A very successful ’97.
