Chianti Classico 2013 & 2012: The Luck of the Draw (Sep 2015)

The 2011 d’Alceo is fascinating to taste next to the Sammarco, as it is much more open-knit, silky and expressive. Cherry jam, pomegranate, spice and new leather flesh out in the glass. The integration of fruit, tannin and acidity is further along than in the Sammarco. The 2011 d’Alceo should open up pretty early, which…

2016 Chianti Classico – A Modern Day Benchmark (Aug 2019)

Another highlight in this range, the 2016 Carla 6 (100% Sangiovese) emerges from a single parcel on the estate measuring under a hectare and planted on gray schist/sand soils. Sweet red cherry, chalk, cedar, spice and dried flowers convey energy and vibrancy. The 2016 was done with manual punchdowns and aged in 500-liter barrels.

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, a hint of pain d’épices. The palate is well balanced with a supple, fruity opening, almost pastille-like with dark cherries, cassis and vanilla pod, smooth and quite sensual on the finish. Excellent.

It has a nicely detailed bouquet, though I feel there is maybe a little too much stemminess at the moment, not that Frédéric Weber had ample choice given the depleted volume. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain…

The Enigma of 2018 Barolo (Feb 2022)

The 2018 Barolo Margheria has just enough energy and nuance to be mildly interesting. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper, sage and bright red-toned fruit all grace this translucent, nuanced Barolo. Vibrant saline notes ring out on the finish. The Margheria is promising, for the year.

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Whites – Blind (Aug 2021)

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a seductive nose of peachy fruit infused with white chocolate and almond, all defined and focused. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation and nicely integrated oak. More white chocolate and hints of praline develop toward a finish that has a slightly honeyed texture, but there is certainly…
