Campania: More Than Just Fiano, Greco and Aglianico (Nov 2018)

Bright ruby-red. Pure, high-pitched aromas of dark cherry, flinty plum, licorice and violet. Clean, smooth and refined; tangy blueberry and pomegranate notes lift and intensify the midpalate. Finishes with building austerity. Very pure and varietally accurate on aback end that features a tarry nuance and lovely verve.

Campania: Forgotten Realms (May 2020)

This 2013 is a classic Taurasi, showing a mix of red and black fruits, offset by rosy florals, savory herbs, minerals, leather tones, and a hint of balsamic spice. On the palate, silky textures give way to spicy red fruits, energized by zesty acids with cool-toned sweet herbs and saturating minerality. The 2013 Contrade di…

Friuli Venezia Giulia: The New Releases (Jan 2020)

Luminous straw yellow. Grapefruit, passion fruit, green figs and sage on the slightly reticent nose. Then much riper, richer and fresher on the palate, with intense grapefruit flavors that linger long on the bright vibrant finish. Pontoni makes his Sauvignon Zitelle from a nine hectares subplot in the larger Zitelle vineyard that is characterized by…

Pride and Tradition: The Friulian Way (Apr 2023)

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Salici is seductive, sweetly scented and delicate in the glass with white flowers, crushed rocks and smoke notes, as young peach nuances come to the fore. This is a total charmer on the palate, soothingly soft, with vibrant acidity and zesty green citrus tones that resonate throughout. A saturation of primary…

Gaja: Sorì San Lorenzo 1971-2011 (Nov 2014)

The 2010 Sorì San Lorenzo jumps from the glass with lavender, violets, plums, smoke and licorice, all in a lifted, precise style built on finesse. The tannins are remarkably sweet and polished for such a young wine. The pulsating fruit and sense of structure are reminiscent of the 1999, but here, there is perhaps a…

Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2013)

Good medium red. Wonderfully nuanced nose combines strawberry, wild herbs, flinty minerality, flowers and camphor, plus a whiff of oyster shell. Less obviously sweet than the Sori Tildin and seriously backward, displaying outstanding inner-mouth verve to the red fruit, graphite and earth flavors. This dense, suave, fine-grained wine is most impressive on the very long,…
