Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Meyney has a very estuarine infused bouquet insofar that you could imagine looking out over the Gironde Estuary on some overcast winter’s day. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very well balanced with an elegant bead of acidity. Plenty of freshness and focus towards the finish, this is a splendid Meyney that…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Meyney has a crisp, focused and detailed bouquet with precise blackberry, blueberry and cedar scents that are almost Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive concentration on the entry, layers of licorice-tinged black fruit and a peppery finish that wants to make a statement. But it's just a bit squidgy. It…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Phélan Ségur is a rich, heady wine. A burst of super-ripe dark fruit, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, smoke, incense and spice races across the palate. As good as the 2019 is, I liked it more en primeur. I find the bottled wine not quite as expressive, especially on the mid palate. Tasted two…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

Another sleeper from Saint-Estèphe, the 2016 Phélan Ségur is super impressive. An enticing bouquet laced with crushed rocks, graphite, iron, smoke, lavender, mint and inky blue/purplish fruit makes a strong opening statement. A wine of power, resonance and gravitas, the 2016 Phélan is remarkably expressive and also full of potential. Tasted two times.

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Phélan-Ségur has a generous nose of pencil-lead-infused black fruit, plus touches of wild mint and damp earth/truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It feels slightly pinched toward a finish that displays just a soupçon of dryness, but there is commendable persistence in situ. Tasted…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

(roughly a 50/50 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon) Good bright ruby-red. Deep, smoky aromas of plum syrup, raspberry, tobacco, iron and roasted nuts. Lush, silky and sweet, with insidious vinosity keeping the lush plum and tobacco flavors fresh and delineated. The suave merlot tannins spread out to cover the entire palate. Much more a…
