Sharing Alike: Petrus 1947 – 2015 (Sep 2018)

The 1996 Petrus has never been an endearing wine and this, the third or fourth bottle that I have tasted, does nothing to change my indifference. It has a slightly herbaceous bouquet that feels enervated when compared to the flamboyant 1998. It just misses the fruit concentration and vivacity you expect from a Petrus, a…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Healthy red-ruby. Red fruit, espresso, iron, tobacco, brown spices and exotic oak scents on the nose. Round and silky in the mouth, but supported by solid structure. Already shows lovely perfume in the mouth. Compared to the softer ’97, this has more penetration and grip. Finishes spicy, firm and quite long.

The 2009 Red Burgundies (May 2011)

The 2008 Mazis-Chambertin is a beguiling, inward wine layered with sensual dark fruit, mocha, minerals and sweet spices. Open and accessible, The 2008 Mazis impresses for its fabulous balance and multi-dimensional, textured finish.

Vinous Table: Private Dinner at Wheeler Farms, Saint Helena, CA (Feb 2023)

The 2005 Léoville-Las-Cases is one of my favorite wines of the night. Now, after 17 years, the 2005 is in a place where it is not a crime to open a bottle. Elegant and regal in bearing, the 2005 Las-Cases is simply everything Las-Cases can and should be. This is a great, great bottle. I…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Léoville Las Cases is one of the most brooding, potent wines of the year. When will it be ready? The answer is not yet. Although I have had other bottles that have been showier. Inky, powerful and potent, the 2005 is a real showstopper. If opened now, the 2005 needs a good 12…

Cellar Journal: Bordeaux 1920-2015 (Dec 2019)

The 2005 Léoville–Las Cases is a wine that needs more time. The nose remains broody compared to the 2007, but is an absolute joy, featuring brambly red fruit, tobacco, smoke, morels and light estuarine scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that have become more supple over the last couple of years. There is…
