Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(Hudelot-Noëllat owns two parcels, one 30 and the other 70 years of age): Medium bright red. Aromas of black raspberry and licorice are given punch by pungent rocky minerality. Concentrated but still quite tight and wound up; this wine too is carrying a high level of CO2. The tannins are fine-grained but distinctly firm in…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Moderately saturated bright red. Slightly high-toned, inky aromas of black cherry, dark berries, spices and licorice. Juicy on entry, then quite creamy and even a bit exotic in the middle palate following the 2016s at this address. In a thicker style but with good supporting energy. Finishes with firm, slightly dry tannins.

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 La Grande Rue Grand Cru is aromatically tailored in a similar vein to the domaine’s other Grand Crus: ethereal and floral in style with rose-petal-infused red fruit, the quintessential Pinoté, and hints of crushed rock developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, cohesive and poised, gaining weight with aeration toward…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru does not deliver quite as much intensity and cohesion as the Echézeaux, offering leafy red berry fruit on the nose, which is quite muted at the moment and needs more presence. The palate has a little more chutzpah, displaying better grip than anticipated and a tightly wound, lightly…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Bright, full red. Musky, complex aromas of raspberry, dried flowers, crushed rock, black pepper, game, dark chocolate and earth. Shows much more definition and inner-mouth lift than the Charmes, with the peppery quality and firm underlying minerality energizing the middle palate. Savory, concentrated, layered and deep, with terrific berry intensity and a hint of cocoa…

The Consistently Delectable 2014 Red Burgundies (Jan 2016)

(Bichot owns a tiny parcel in the upper part of this grand cru and harvests it very late; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aging in one new and one one-year-old barrel): Bright, dark red. Pure aromas of raspberry, strawberry and clove, with hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. In a silky but…
