2006 Brunello di Montalcino Revisited (Sep 2013)

Valdicava’s 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano was another wine that appealed to the audience. And how could it not? A rich, dark, powerful wine, the 2006 showed all of its depth and pure muscle in a stunning display of class. It was utterly magnificent.

Brunello di Montalcino 2007 and 2006 Riserva (Jul 2012)

Dark red. Aromas of plum, tobacco, smoke, leather and underbrush. Rather rustic on the palate, with plum, earth and leather flavors dominating. A distinctly old-school Brunello with tongue-drying tannins and a lightly roasted character. I wanted more freshness of fruit.

Le Macchiole Messorio 1994-2006: A Study in Greatness (Feb 2011)

The 2004 Messorio is a bit of a mystery in this tasting. The silkiness and gorgeous perfume that are the hallmarks of the vintage are clearly present, but the wine is marred by elements of cork taint that worsen over time. What a shame, as the 2004 is one of my all-time favorite Messorios.

Le Macchiole Messorio 1994-2006: A Study in Greatness (Feb 2011)

The fruit is breathtaking in its beauty but remains quite primary, with only the subtlest hints of early tertiary nuance coming through from time to time.  The finish is exceptionally polished, nuanced and silky….

Exploring the Best of Northern Italy (Oct 2007)

Quintarelli’s 1997 Alzero is a masterpiece. Blessed with extraordinary, captivating aromatics, it reveals new layers of spice, licorice, coffee, chocolate, cassis, minerals and sweet dark fruit with each successive taste. What I find most remarkable about this wine is that, despite being packed with jammy, concentrated fruit, it is remarkably light on its feet. It…

Focus on Northeast Italy (Mar 2006)

Nearly black color. Extremely youthful, unforthcoming nose hints at black cherry, plum, violet, bitter chocolate, quinine and bell pepper. This is almost too concentrated and tannic to describe. Palate- and toothstaining flavors of black plum, coffee liqueur, spices, tobacco, vanilla and herbs abound. Alcoholic, heady wine, with a much denser and more tannic finish than…
