2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Coutet is a gorgeous Barsac. Orange peel, cinnamon, dried flowers and lightly honeyed notes abound. The wine is rich and deeply textured, but not at all heavy. This is a terrific showing from a Barsac that is both highly nuanced and also understated.

Pierre, Denis & Jean-Jacques: Doisy-Daëne & L’Extravagance 1942-2013 (Jan 2022)

The 2014 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne has a perfumed bouquet with yellow plum, nectarine and orange zest aromas, clean and so precise. The palate is unctuous with a killer line of acidity, tensile and focused with a lemongrass-tinged, powerful finish. Maybe I would like a little more persistence? That’s quibbling though, this is pretty awesome.

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

One of the undisputed stars of the vintage, the 2014 Doisy-Daëne L’Extravagant is a real stunner. Plush and beautifully textured, with lovely brightness and impeccable overall balance, the 2014 simply has it all. Lemon confit, baked apple tart, brioche and coconut are all pushed forward in this sensual, exquisite Sauternes. The 2014 is deep, but…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Doisy-Védrines has a slight adhesive scent on the nose that obscures the fruit profile. Despite rigorous aeration it does dissipate. The palate is clean and pure on the entry. This has a fine bead of acidity with moderate depth, quite harmonious from start to finish with a twist of orange rind towards the…

Bordeaux 2010: The Sweet Wines (Aug 2011)

Medium-deep yellow-gold. Intense aromas of apricot, pear, peach and white flowers complicated by a touch of spicy oak. Clean, fresh and full on the palate, with enticing flavors of ripe pear, citrus and honey and a lingering peppery papaya finish. Offers sneaky concentration, and the hint of honeyed botrytis at the back adds further complexity….

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Bright medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, violet, tobacco leaf, licorice and cedar. Dense, lush, sweet and fine-grained, with a wonderfully pliant, silky texture devoid of rough edges. Utterly seamless, savory wine but with no shortage of vinosity or energy. Finishes suave and very long.
