A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Alter Ego de Palmer offers fleshy red cherry and wild strawberry scents on the nose, rose petal mixed with subtle mulch-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, fresh and poised with an open and expressive, slightly ferrous finish. This has a lot of personality and it…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good full red-ruby. Complex nose combines plum, mocha, minerals, tobacco and burnished oak. A bit tight on entry, then expands and explodes toward the back, showing dense, insinuating flavors of black fruits and licorice. Chewy, sharply delineated Pichon-Baron with excellent underlying backbone and broad, palate-coating tannins. An outstanding vintage for this estate.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Pichon Baron is consistent with the bottle tasted at the vertical back in 2018. It has a very elegant nose featuring a mixture of red and black fruit, fresh mint and touches of graphite (though in this bottle, it is not quite as prominent). The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp entry, offering…

The 2014 White Burgundies: What’s Not To Like? (Sep 2016)

(tasted from tank; already fined): Bright yellow. Aromas of yellow peach and white plum, with a liqueur-like suggestion of mirabelle. Broad, rich and dry, showing a sexy fine-grained mouthfeel. This dense, classic village Puligny conveys an impression of laid-back energy and finishes with lovely lift and finesse.

2013 and 2012 White Burgundies (Sep 2014)

Pale, bright lemon-yellow. Lemon candy and wet stone on the youthfully discreet nose. Then tactile, dusty and sharply delineated on the palate, and more dominated by minerality in the early going than the Charmes. Suave, juicy wine with a powerful impression of energy. The classy finish coats the palate, spreading out horizontally and building. Lovely…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Deep ruby-red color. More expressive aromas of crystallized dark berries, dark chocolate and animal fur. Lush and sweet; thick but delineated. Wonderfully concentrated. This, too, seems rather withdrawn today, but the strength of material is clear to see. Finishes with firm tannins and explosive fruit that goes on and on.
