Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain is the usual 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay from 90-year old vines. Light blueberry and strawberry scents on the nose that is well-defined, the palate is stylistically equidistant between Pinot Noir and Gamay, the finish just a little tart and short.

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir has quite a backward nose, darker fruit than some of its peers, though well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, good backbone here, also quite “strict” in style (in a Pommard kinda way). This might age better than you think.

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 La Mission Haut-Brion is dark, powerful and authoritative from the very first impression. A dark, beguiling wine, it boasts serious richness and concentration. Savory herbs, tobacco, menthol, licorice and a host of dark fruit infuse this deep, intense La Mission. The 2014 is not a huge wine, but it does have exceptional balance….

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 La Mission Haut-Brion offers bright and vivid scents that immediately captivate the olfactory scenes: black fruit, cedar, pencil box and light, minty aromas. It’s much better than its First Growth neighbor. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious, and has lovely depth with a gentle grip. This is a sophisticated and…

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2024: Dark Elegance (Oct 2025)

The 2014 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservé Pignan is gorgeous, though readers are well advised to allow it at least five more years in bottle, or else open it a good 12 hours in advance without decanting. Supremely elegant notes of kirsch, stemmy tones and fresh violets mingle with herbal glimmers on the beguiling nose, immediately signaling a…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Palmer is endowed with serious depth and intensity. Black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol infuse the 2014 with striking midpalate depth, unctuousness and texture. Silky, plush and polished, the 2014 will likely offer a very long window of pure drinking pleasure. It is one of the sexiest, raciest 2014s readers…
