Brunello di Montalcino: Sleek ’13s, Surprising ’12 Riservas (Apr 2018)

Bright dark red. Aromas of black cherry, menthol and violet are complicated by hints of potpourri. Not an especially fleshy or complex wine but offers good lift to the savory, precise flavors of ripe plum, cherry and spices. Finishes firmly tannic, clean and long.

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Sep 2006)

Medium saturated ruby. Cool aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and mocha. Then sweet and bright in the mouth, with intense, peppery berry flavors complicated by leather and minerals. A distinctly stony, gripping style of wine that finishes a tad short and green. Currently less expressive and less generous than the best vintages, but keep in…

Daniel Thomases on Tuscany (Jul 2000)

Fresh, moderately deep ruby-red. Spicy, lively aromas of cinnamon and vanilla. Round in flavor and rather elegantly styled, but doesn’t offer the weight or impact of a major wine.

At times, the 2013 does not taste much like a wine from Bolgheri at all. That is not positive nor negative, but simply an observation….

2018 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2021)

The 2018 Sassicaia is fabulous. Bright and beautifully poised, the 2018 opens with brilliant aromatics that make a strong first impression. Delicate and light on its feet, the 2018 is a regal wine that is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Sassicaia is the most finessed of Bolgheri’s top…
