The Many Facets of Rioja (Nov 2015)

Inky ruby. Potent aromas of blackberry liqueur, cherry compote, candied licorice, olive paste and smoky herbs; smells like a suave northern Rhône wine. Appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and spicecake flavors show excellent depth and power but come off as lithe and surprisingly graceful. Impressively energetic wine with strong finishing clarity and persistence and…

New Releases from Spain (Sep 2013)

Opaque ruby. Ripe red berries and cherry-cola on the highly perfumed mineral, floral nose. Broad and deep but lively, offering sweet raspberry, lavender pastille and mineral flavors lifted by peppery spices. Tightly focused on the silky finish, which manages to be vibrant and rich at the same time. Tannins come up with air but this…

Focus on Spain (Sep 2014)

(all garnacha, from a vineyard that is reportedly over 100 years old): Inky purple. Explosive aromas of candied red fruits, incense, rose oil and Asian spices, with a bright mineral overtone. Stains the palate with intense raspberry liqueur and floral pastille flavors. For all this wine’s building weight and power there’s real finesse here. Sweet,…

Probably one of the earlier drinking Pauillacs to drink over the next five years….

Santa Barbara: Better Than Ever (Sep 2017)

The 2015 Pinot Noir La Côte possesses inner density and depth that give it an inward, implosive feel. A dollop of whole clusters adds some aromatic nuance. It will be interesting to see if the 2015 opens up over time. Today, it is quite reticent and not ready to show all of its cards.

Alsace 2012s and Early-Released 2013s (Apr 2015)

Golden yellow; much darker than the Hengst. Very deep aromas of smoked pork, papaya, grilled pineapple, toffee and Bourbon vanilla. Rich and chewy in the mouth, with dominant flavors of tropical fruits and smoke. Finishes oily, saline and very long. You can almost smell and taste the Rangen’s volcanic ash here. This powerful wine borders…
