The Best of Rioja and Ribera del Duero (Nov 1999)

Full, bright medium red. Superripe aromas of roasted red fruits and nutty, tarry oak. Good intensity and freshness in the mouth; dry but ripe. A bit short on texture, in part due to slightly tart lemony acidity. Firmly tannic finish.

Pazo Restaurant (Jun 2010)

The 1988 Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape (magnum) was stratospheric. Dark, intense and powerful, the wine totally conquered the palate and intellect with superb length and fabulous overall balance. The volatile acidity was on the edge, but this was otherwise an eternal Châteauneuf-du-Pape destined for a long, long life.

Digging up a Languedoc Treasure: Mas de Daumas Gassac 1978-2022 (Jul 2024)

The magnificent 2001 Rouge ranks alongside the finest Mas de Daumas Gassac vintages. Intense tobacco, dried flowers, spice box, dried lavender and black currant fill the air. Round and complete on the full-bodied palate, the detailed 2001 is an instant classic that won me over in a heartbeat.

Vinous Lockdown Special (Oct 2020)

The 2001 Rouge is terrific. Wood smoke, white truffle, worn-in leather and cedar give the 2001 beguiling aromatic complexity and nuance. The tannins remain firm, ensuring another decade or so of fine drinking. The 2001 is an excellent choice for readers are looking for a mature wine to drink now. Some slightly angular contours remain,…

Languedoc/Roussillon 2001 (Mar 2004)

Bright ruby-red. Candied raspberry, minerals, gunflint, licorice and tarragon on the nose, plus a suggestion of raw berries. Very young and tightly wound; dense but currently folded in on itself. Intensely spicy flavors of bitter cherry, cassis, tobacco, licorice and tarragon. Distinctly atypical for Languedoc wine in its mid-palate energy and underlying spine. Finishes long…

Digging up a Languedoc Treasure: Mas de Daumas Gassac 1978-2022 (Jul 2024)

The 1985 Rouge is totally seductive. Dried black fruits, tobacco, balsamic notes and leathery nuances rise up from the glass. Balanced by refreshing acidity and framed by smooth tannins, the 1985 showcases vivid intensity on the medium-bodied palate before concluding with an alluring finish. Kudos to the Guibert family for crafting this ravishing beauty.
