The 2013 and 2012 Northern Rhône Wines (Feb 2015)

(one-third new oak): Light yellow. Pungent aromas of pear skin, mango and lime pith, plus a suave floral overtone. Penetrating, sharply focused citrus and pit fruit flavors gain depth, spiciness and a touch of honey with air. Dry, penetrating and minerally on the persistent finish, which leaves violet and bitter pear skin notes behind.

2010 and 2009 Southern Rhone Wines (Jan 2012)

(50% grenache, 30% mourvedre and 20% syrah): Glass-staining ruby. A highly complex bouquet evokes black raspberry, mulberry, potpourri and a hint of pit fruits. Deep but vivacious, offering expansive red and dark berry flavors and suggestions of fruitcake and allspice. Finishes with impressive focus and length, echoing the red fruit and spice notes.

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

(50% grenache, 40% mourvedre and 10% syrah) Bright purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of ripe raspberry, boysenberry and cherry, with complicating notes of cola, sassafras and star anise. Deep, juicy dark fruit flavors provide impressive palate coverage and are braced by zesty minerality. The dark berry and cola notes resonate on the long, focused finish. This…

Focus on Washington: Hot Times in the Desert (Nov 2016)

Dark red. Black cherry, menthol and peppery herbs on the nose, plus a note of chocolate mint and a riper hint of raspberry liqueur. Very ripe and plush but dry in the mouth, offering a fine-grained texture and good depth to its raspberry, licorice, menthol and spice flavors. I’d give this wine a couple years…

2016 Northern Rhône Whites: Excellent but Often Scarce (May 2018)

Light bright yellow. Expansive orchard and pit fruit aromas show good clarity, and a sexy floral element emerges slowly. Sappy, palate-coating pear nectar and nectarine flavors are complicated by notes of honey and candied ginger, while a gingery element adds spicy lift. The pear note returns on the finish, which hangs on with very good…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

The 2015 Fleur Cardinale is terrific. Exotic and flamboyantly ripe, it exudes richness and depth in all of its dimensions. Blackberry jam, grilled herbs, mocha, leather and menthol are all amped up in a dramatic, full-bodied wine that is long on personality. As always, Fleur Cardinale shows the more opulent side of Saint-Émilion. A burst…
