2011 Red Burgundies (Jan 2013)

(racked and sulfited): Good bright, dark red. Raspberry, spices, flowers and licorice on the scented nose. Dense, sweet and creamy, with a dominant flavor of sappy maraschino cherry. Finishes impressively long and palate-saturating, with ripe tannins and good medicinal reserve. Lachaux noted that this cuvee used to be harder, but is very supple in both…

2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

Good deep red. Medicinal dark cherry, mint and licorice on the nose. A dense, nicely concentrated midweight, with red and darker fruit flavors lifted by orange zest and mint. Finishes with fine tannins, a stony firmness and a sappy cherry flavor. Nothing overripe about this village wine.

The Consistently Delectable 2014 Red Burgundies (Jan 2016)

(vinified with 40% whole clusters): Medium red. Fruit-driven aromas of red cherry and strawberry. The silkiest and thickest of these 2014s to this point but with plenty of energy and cut. Boasts a sexy stem component and finishes juicy and persistent, with plenty of ripe tannins. Charles Lachaux told me that he uses the whole-cluster…

The Consistently Delectable 2014 Red Burgundies (Jan 2016)

(a blend of eight vineyards): Bright medium red. Very dark aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice, herbs and spices. A juicy, youthfully tight midweight with a firm spine of dusty tannins and sneaky persistence. (Incidentally, the 2014 Bourgogne Rouge showed sexy red fruit flavors in a round, juicy style and should offer early pleasure. )

2008 and 2007 Red Burgundies (Mar 2010)

(Lachaux purchased just over a half-hectare of 53-year-old vines from Christopher Newman) Good medium red. Nose offers dark cherry, smoky oak and complex soil tones. At once dense and energetic, conveying an impression of rather strong energy from the combination of firm acids and underlying minerality. In a cooler, almost peppery style, with the wine’s…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village was showing a bit of reduction on the nose when tasted at the Domaine. Quite savory, leafy with a light ferrous note, it opens nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, dried orange peel and allspice intermingles with touches of white pepper and clove on…
