Songs Full of Light – Lafaurie-Peyraguey 1906-2018 (Aug 2019)

The 1998 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a curious follow-up to the successful 1997. Two or three bottles presented attractive scents of dried honey and yellow plum, although background diesel scents vary from bottle to bottle, lending a Germanic personality. The palate is quite rich on the entry, with hints of caramel and marzipan, and quite forward and…

1999 and 1998 Sauternes (Jul 2001)

Liqueur-like aromas of pear, peach, white plum and honey, along with subtle oak notes. Fat, sweet, rich and oaky; a mouthfilling, honeyed Sauternes showing a bit of youthful aggressiveness. But long on the back end and very promising.

Bordeaux 2010: The Dry Wines (Aug 2011)

Bright straw-yellow. Mandarin orange, pear, vanilla and licorice aromas are lifted by a hint of ginger on the nose. Supple, sweet and succulent on the palate, with rich, ripe citrus, peach and mineral flavors nicely perked up by harmonious acidity. Very complex wine, finishing bright and clean, with outstanding building persistence.

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Guiraud offers attractive scents of dried honey, pressed white flowers and honeysuckle. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a concentrated opening, fine acidity, spicier than its peers with a botrytis-laden finish that has just the right amount of bite. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Bright yellow-gold. Deep aromas of lime, peach, quince, minerals, menthol and saffron are complicated by tangy botrytis tones. Ripe, creamy flavors of peach, lime and lemon verbena show noteworthy sweetness and power, with harmonious acidity providing lift. This very rich, textured wine coats the palate with tropical fruit and mineral flavors that linger impressively on…

Pierre, Denis & Jean-Jacques: Doisy-Daëne & L’Extravagance 1942-2013 (Jan 2022)

The 1996 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne has a deep amber hue. It has a very Tokaji nose, well defined, but maybe not as complex as more recent vintages. Barley sugar, creme caramel and caramelised pear, a touch of peach skin. The palate is very well balanced, unctuous and maybe just missing a bit of acidity on…
