Vintage Retrospective: The 2008 Napa Valley Cabernets (May 2018)

(14.6% alcohol): Saturated red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, tobacco, spices and rose petal, plus a whiff of smoked meat. Lovely juicy, fine-grained wine in a very firm style, offering an attractive balance of acidity and sweetness. Not especially expansive in the middle palate owing to a slight herbal streak but this wine should yet…

Jackson Hole Wine Auction Charity Dinner at Daniel (Aug 2007)

The 1989 Chapoutier Hermitage Le Pavillon was incredibly intense and powerful. Made in a dark, somewhat alcoholic style, it came across as dark, rich and totally seductive in its expression of dark fruit, flowers and cassis.

2001 and 2000 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2003)

Saturated ruby-red. More reserved aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, minerals, cinders and spices. Juicy and tight, with a varietally accurate raw currant character. Fresh, intense and structured for the year. Finishes very long, with firm tannins and strong spice character.

1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Fresh ruby-red. Fruit-driven, very primary aromas of cassis, wild cherry, leather and pepper. Lush, rich and deep; showing more sweetness and texture today than the more backward Meal. This large-scaled wine has superb density and clarity of flavor. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and outstanding length. Perhaps more complete than the Meal.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good medium ruby. Superripe but lively aromas of kirsch and chocolate. Sweet, sappy and full, with high-toned flavors of cherry, blackberry and licorice. This offers compelling sweetness and concentration of flavor without going over the top, thanks to its firm mineral spine. Lively and very long on the finish. Bottled without filtration in February of…

2005 and 2004 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2007)

Opaque dark ruby. Incredibly rich, deep and pungent on the nose, offering an outsized bouquet of kirsch, blackberry, cassis and musky cured tobacco. I commented that this smelled like a great port and Guigal, who clearly adores this wine, said Well, 1945 Taylor is a wine I’d walk miles for. Powerful, deeply concentrated and sweet,…
