Alsace 1998 and 1997 (Jul 1999)

Subdued but deep aromas of white flowers and lime. Dry (just three grams per liter r.s.), deep and impressively structured. Slow to evolve but already long on personality. Very densely packed and deep. This should develop in bottle for many years. Very long, adamantly dry finish. Jean Trimbach considers this a great vintage for the…

Keeping Everyone Happy: Southwold Bordeaux 2022

The 2022 Le Petit Mouton has a well-defined bouquet with graphite-tinged black fruit that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite peppery in style but there is ample sapidity and freshness on the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

2002 and 2001 Red Burgundies (Mar 2004)

Good full red. Aromatic nose dominated by oak scents of cinnamon, clove and bourbon. Smoky and fairly rich, with flavors of gunflint, spice and nutty oak. Rather New World and extractive in style. Finishes with dusty tannins and considerable nutty oak.

2004 and 2003 Red Burgundies (Mar 2006)

(from barrel; this one only finished its malolactic fermentation in September) Medium red. Smoky red fruits and underbrush on the nose. Fat, full and sweet, with flavors of redcurrant and plum. Not more concentrated than the Mitans but possesses a bit more mineral spine. Slightly sauvage suggestions of leather and game.

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

Good bright, deep red. Aromas of cherry, spices and herbs. Supple, sweet and plump; a very ripe, gentle style. I find myself wishing for more depth and force. This fruit appears to have been picked late.

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

Good full red. Pure aromas and flavors of strawberry, raspberry, minerals, flowers and earth. A very suave and silky wine with lovely lift and precision. The penetrating, long finish features very good cut but no dryness. A distinctly feminine, tangy style of Corton-very easy to drink.
