2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Lynch-Bages is just as powerful and dense from bottle as it was from barrel. Deep, powerful and bold, it possesses remarkable richness in all of its dimensions. Ripe red cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and rose petal all develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s sheer amplitude today that is quite remarkable….

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2014 Lynch-Bages is just a little meager on the nose, well-defined but lacking presence and fruit intensity and a bit dusty by comparison. It could be a question of not having enough time, a tiny amount of stage fright perhaps? The palate is better with pleasant tart red cherries mingling with blackberry, cedar and…

Blind Vision: 2015 Burgundy Red & White (Nov 2018)

The 2015 Les Corton Grand Cru has plenty of leather-tinged red berry fruit on the nose, perhaps without quite the same definition as Thibault Liger-Belair’s Corton-Renardes. Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Medium red. Musky aromas of redcurrant, dried flowers, underbrush, menthol and licorice. Plush, silky and deep if a touch youthfully reduced, with its red berry, spice and earth flavors enlivened by savory minerality. A seriously mouthfilling, fine-grained wine with the stuffing and structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. A year ago, this wine was…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Medium red; less saturated than the old-vines village offering, as Bachelet avoids overextracting this cuvée. Subtle, inviting nose melds black raspberry, plum and game. Seriously rich, tactile wine with lovely sweetness and concentration to its dark fruit and floral flavors. Plenty of tannins here for a graceful evolution in bottle but not at all hard…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Moderately saturated light-medium red. Reticent aromas of red berries, black cherry, licorice and spices. Supple red and darker berry flavors are complicated by licorice, menthol and spice notes. Finishes with a firm dusting of tannins and decent length. Good solid village wine with a touch of sweetness.
