Looking Back To Go Forward: Lafite-Rothschild 1868 – 2015 (Jul 2018)

The 1982 Lafite-Rothschild can be a variable performer. There was a period when it was dwarfed by Latour. However, two recent bottles demonstrate a wine that perhaps has just taken 30+ years to reach its zenith. The bouquet is very intense with blackberry, cedar, graphite and hints of morels, gathering momentum in the glass, perhaps…

1982 Bordeaux, 20 Years On (Jul 2002)

Good full, deep red. Slightly high-toned, highly nuanced nose of currant, roasted meat, cedar, marzipan, smoke and tobacco. Supple on entry, then firmed by sound acids. Still quite unevolved but seems distinctly less deep than the bottle of ’59 I tasted alongside it. A rather muscular style of Lafite, finishing with big, tongue-dusting tannins. Drink…

Bordeaux 2018: Back in Black (Apr 2019)

The 2018 Lacoste-Borie is plump, silky and absolutely delicious. Bright red cherry, plum and mocha add lovely shades of nuance throughout. I would prefer to drink this succulent, mid-weight Pauillac over the next handful of years, while it retains its youthful juiciness. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Tasted…

The Future’s Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Lacoste-Borie was picked September 21 to October 5 at 44hl/ha. It has a pleasant bouquet of blackberry, iodine and violet aromas, perhaps needing just a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a graphite-tinged entry. Supple and quite approachable, this is well-balanced with good acidity and some oakiness on the finish, though…

Written in the Stars: Bordeaux 1865-2020 (Dec 2023)

The 2010 Rieussec is similar to the previous bottle a couple of years ago. It has since opened with saffron-tinged honeyed fruit, dried honey and almond shavings. This example is more vanillary and oaky than previous ones, and that actually distracts from the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied; again, the new oak feels more…
